End of Regular Season

With Plant winning over Riverview in week 8, TLR was left in a very tough situation. Riverview beat Berkeley the same week, so dropping Riverview below Berkeley doesn’t make sense. The Plant win should move them up, but Plant lost to both Berkeley and Jesuit, so we can’t put Plant above either team. We don’t have much room to wiggle here. Suffice it to say, Riverview, Berkeley Prep, Jesuit, and Plant are all on the same tier this season. TLR believes any team in that group can win or lose to any other team in that group on any given night. So what we’re saying here is don’t get too worked up this week over #2 through #5. What we really have is a 4-way tie behind Cardinal Mooney. But – it’s just for one week. District playoffs will work all of this out, so hang tight!

  1. Cardinal Mooney (17-1) – As impressive as Mooney has been all season, I doubt anyone saw them taking down 2018 Florida runners-up Bishop Moore by 9 goals – on the road. The Cougars have certainly put the Tampa area on the map over the last two seasons.
  2. Riverview (14-4) – The Rams grabbed themselves a nice road win against Berkeley last week, but stumbled at home against a fired-up Plant squad.
  3. Berkeley Prep (11-4) – The Buccaneers dropped a game at home to a strong Riverview team, then went on the road to ODA and gutted out an overtime victory without relying on seniors.
  4. Jesuit (10-7) – The Tigers suffered a 13 goal loss to the very talented Cardinal Mooney team last week, but finished regular season with a great home win against a 1-loss Newsome squad.
  5. Plant (11-5) – Plant took on IMG for the second time in 2019, losing 17-3 on the road. The Panthers then closed out the regular season with a home win over Riverview, 10-8.
  6. Newsome (16-2) – The Wolves booked a road win over Bartow in week 8, but dropped a road win to Jesuit, 11-5.
  7. Steinbrenner (11-2) – The Warriors did not have games scheduled for week 8.
  8. Out-of-Door (11-3) – ODA took down Tampa Catholic in week 8, then dropped a home game in overtime to Berkeley Prep.
  9. Wiregrass (9-2) – Wiregrass did not have games scheduled for week 8.
  10. Mitchell (11-4) – Welcome to the Top 10, Mustangs. Mitchell finishes regular season with 4 losses to Wiregrass (x2), Berkeley, and Steinbrenner. 3 of the 4 losses came in the first 3 games of the season.

Week 7

  1. Cardinal Mooney (15-1) – The Cougars earned two more wins in week 7 and are now in playoff prep mode as they get ready with games against Jesuit and Bishop Moore. Mooney is the top seed in district 17 and has gone coast-to-coast as TLR’s #1 team for 2019.
  2. Riverview (13-3) – Spots 1 & 2 are now held by district 17. The Rams will finish the regular season with a couple tough games; April 9 on the road against Berkeley Prep, and April 12 on the road against Plant. Neither game will prevent Riverview from their hold on the #2 seed in district 17. A loss to either team will likely drop them here. Wins will solidify the Rams as a tough #2.
  3. Berkeley Prep (10-3) – The Buccaneers earned an overtime win on the road against district rival Plant in week 7 as well as a win against a scrappy, talented East Lake squad. They finished the week on the road at IMG where they were expectedly outmatched against a stacked Ascenders squad. Berkeley faces #2 Riverview on April 9th, then ends regular season on the road against #8 ODA on April 11th. Berkeley is undefeated in district 16 and has earned the top seed.
  4. Jesuit (9-6) – Jesuit completed regular season district play with a win over Jefferson, then fell to a very strong Lake Mary team 12-2 at home. The Tigers close out the regular season with two very interesting matchups; April 9th on the road against #1 Cardinal Mooney, and at home April 11th against #6 Newsome. Jesuit threw us a surprise last year with their win over Mooney. Can it happen again?
  5. Plant (10-4) – Plant dropped an overtime loss to district rival Berkeley on April 2nd and beat Steinbrenner on April 5th. Week 8 has the Panthers visiting IMG (April 9th) and hosting Riverview (April 12th). Plant is the #3 seed in district 16 and will play Jesuit in the first round on April 16th.
  6. Newsome (15-1) – Newsome cruised through victories over Freedom and Wharton in week 7. Their last game of the regular season is on April 11th at Jesuit and will be their toughest game all year. Newsome is undefeated in district 14 and is the #1 seed.
  7. Steinbrenner (11-2) – The Warriors secured a 13-12 victory over Alonso on April 1st, took down Wesley Chapel on the 3rd, but ran into a hot Plant team on the 5th. Steinbrenner lost that game 12-5. The Warriors are undefeated in district play and are the top seed heading into district 15 playoffs.  Their regular season games are complete.
  8. Out-of-Door (10-2) – The Thunder had no games in week 7. They start back up on April 9th when they travel to Tampa Catholic, then they complete regular season on April 11th when they host Berkeley Prep. ODA is the 3rd seed in district 17 and will play Riverview in the first round.
  9. Wiregrass (9-2) – Wiregrass took down Mitchell in a close game last week, 16-14 – then suffered a loss to Lakeland 14-9. They have closed out their regular season, but secured the #2 seed in district 15. They will play Mitchell in the first round in what should be a great game and one Mitchell will be hungry for. Don’t miss it if you are around.
  10. Alonso (10-4) – The Ravens have games in week 8 against Wesley Chapel (4/8), Calvaray Christian (4/9), and Mitchell (4/10) to close out the regular season. Alons has secured the #4 seed in district 16 – one of the toughest districts in the state. They will play Berkeley Prep in the first round.

Week 6

  1. Cardinal Mooney (13-1) – While most teams were on Spring Break, Mooney racked up 3 more wins – vs St. Pete Catholic, Calvary Christian, and most notably, against Plant. Their 15-5 score against the visiting Panthers was a surprise to many, but it shows how dominant this Cardinal Mooney squad can be.  They’ve locked up the top seed in District 17. Week 7 games include a trip to St. Stephen’s on April 3 and hosting Bishop Verot on April 5. Keep an eye on Week 8 when Jesuit travels to Sarasota on April 9th.
  2. Riverview (11-3) – The Rams make a huge jump last week due to their road win against Jesuit, 10-9. Riverview’s only loss this season to a TLR-area team was a week 2 loss to our #1 team Cardinal Mooney. Riverview is looking like the surprising team from 2018 – and the area is better for it. The Rams should handle their week 7 opponents (Calvary Christian and Sarasota Military Academy) just fine.
  3. Berkeley Prep (8-2) – Due to a combination of Spring Break and game cancellation, the Bucs spent over two weeks without sticks in their hands, then traveled 2 hours and 30 minutes south to play Canterbury to knock the rust off. Berkeley played their worst game of the season, looking exactly like boys who’d rather be enjoying their time away from school.  Despite such a rough outing, they came away with only a single goal loss. The game was intended to get them ready for Plant on April 2. No matter the outcome, Plant will be the #3 seed heading into playoffs (see below). A Berkeley win puts them at #1 and Jesuit at #2. Those two teams swap places if Plant beats Berkeley on Tuesday. Berkeley retains the spot ahead of Jesuit due to the Bucs win head-to-head on March 6.
  4. Jesuit (8-5) – Jesuit did what TLR expected and earned a road win against Plant in Week 6, but then surprised us (and a lot of others) by dropping a home game against Riverview. The Tigers stay ahead of Plant in our poll due to the result of that head-to-head matchup. This is still a very strong team – one of the most well-rounded locally. They’re simply waiting on the result of the Berkeley / Plant game Tuesday to find out if they are the #1 seed or the #2 seed (see below).
  5. Plant (9-3) – TLR expected the losses to both Jesuit and Mooney. Next up is Berkeley. The result of that game on April 2 will solidify the seeds heading into district 16 playoffs. Oddly enough, no matter the outcome, Plant will be the #3 seed. The Panthers also host #7 Steinbrenner on April 5 for what could be an interesting matchup.
  6. Newsome (13-1) – The Wolves continue to do well. They’re certainly winning against teams they are expected to beat. They do move from #5 to #6 this week despite winning due to the big Riverview win over Jesuit. Riverview obviously moves up forcing many teams down a spot. Newsome remains under Plant due to their matchup on March 8th that Plant won 8-6. Newsome has 4 games remaining this season and should go 4-0 over that span. They are a lock for the #1 seed in district 14.
  7. Steinbrenner (9-1) – The Warriors continue to win as well, defeating Wiregrass, Freedom, and Sunlake last week. Their game against Alonso on April 1 could be a tight matchup. Assuming the Warriors take care of their last district game against Wesley Chapel, Steinbrenner will be the #1 seed heading into district 15 playoffs.
  8. Out-of-Door (10-2) – The Thunder earned themselves a nice win on the road against a tough Admiral Farragut squad in week 6. That is a big win for this team. It looks as though ODA is on Spring Break for Week 7. They return to play on April 9th when they travel to Tampa Catholic.
  9. Wiregrass (8-1) – Wiregrass finally suffered a loss – Steinbrenner took them down in week 6. It was a huge game for Steinbrenner as it sealed up the top seed in their district. We hope both teams will see each other once playoffs begin.
  10. Alonso (9-3) – The Ravens continue to earn wins. They are still one of the more surprising teams this season. They host Steinbrenner on April 1 for what could be a tight game. We expect the Ravens to go 5-1 over their last 6 games, but anything can happen – which is why we play the game. Alonso will be the #4 seed in district 16.

District 16 playoff seeding notes: In the event that Plant defeats Berkeley on April 2, there will be a 3-way tie between Jesuit, Plant, and Berkeley. The first tie-breaker that impacts the standings is ‘road district wins’. Jesuit has 4, Plant has 3, and Berkeley has 2. With Jesuit now at the #1 seed, we are left with a 2-way tie between Plant and Berkeley. The tiebreaker that impacts the two teams now is ‘outcome vs top-ranked seed’. Berkeley won against Jesuit, Plant did not. Berkeley takes the #2 spot and Plant takes the #3.

In the event that Berkeley defeats Plant on April 2, Berkeley gets the #1 spot due to being undefeated in district play. Jesuit gets the #2 spot and Plant gets the #3.

Week 5

  1. Cardinal Mooney (10-1) – The Cougars continue to roll in 2019. At 10-1, they are where we expected so far. Their next two opponents are St. Pete Catholic and Calvary Christian. Neither should be trouble. A lot of people should pay attention to March 29th when Plant visits Sarasota. Depending upon your choice for state rankings, this is either #4 Mooney vs #10 Plant (Florida Lacrosse News), #7 Mooney vs #23 Plant (Lax Numbers), or #6 Mooney vs #21 Plant (MaxPreps).
  2. Plant (8-1) – No games in week 5 due to Spring Break. Tough week next week as the Panthers have Jesuit on the 27th and Mooney on the 29th, then Berkeley on April 2nd. That’s a tough stretch for any team.
  3. Berkeley Prep (8-1) – No games in week 5 due to Spring Break. The Buccaneers return to play on March 29th when they travel to play Canterbury. Their next big game is on April 2nd against Plant for the top seed in District 16. Maybe our Game of the Week.
  4. Jesuit (7-4) – Jesuit handled Buchholz and Miami’s Belen Jesuit without trouble, but fell to a national powerhouse in Dallas Jesuit. That was the loss we predicted last week, so certainly not unexpected or impactful here. Huge district macthup on March 27th when the Tigers travel to Plant. District seedings are definitely on the line in that game. TLR will be there!
  5. Newsome (10-1) – No games in week 5 due to Spring Break. Next games are Bloomingdale (3/26), Robinson (3/27), and Durant (3/29). The Wolves are not expected to move from this spot.
  6. Riverview (7-1) – The Rams handled Barron Collier last week 11-7. Next up is Shipley School from Pennsylvania on March 26th, then Jesuit on March 29th. Very tough games for Riverview. Wins would be huge for them.
  7. Steinbrenner (6-1) – No games in week 5 due to Spring Break. They return to host undefeated Wiregrass for the top seed in district 15 on Tuesday. That is our Game of the Week. Following that matchup is Freedom (3/27) and Sunlake (3/28).
  8. Out-of-Door (8-2) – ODA lost to Cardinal Mooney last week, but won against Lakewood Ranch. We still think they are where they need to be in our poll. They play Admiral Farragut on Tuesday – which will be a difficult game, then Bishop Verot on March 28th.
  9. Wiregrass (8-0) – No games in week 5 due to Spring Break. Wiregrass visits Steinbrenner on Tuesday for our Game of the Week. It is a battle for the top seed going into playoffs and is huge for both teams.
  10. Alonso (7-3) – No games in week 5 due to Spring Break. The Ravens return from hiatus on March 26th when they host Wharton.

Week 4

  1. Cardinal Mooney (7-1) – As expected, the Cougars handled both week 4 games without much effort. Week 5 has Mooney meeting district opponent ODA on the 19th, then Boca Raton’s St. John Paul II Academy on the 23rd. The SJP game has the potential to be a fairly close matchup. Keep an eye on it. We don’t expect the Cougars to surrender their top spot on our list this season, but a surprise loss down the stretch to Plant or Jesuit could certainly change things.
  2. Plant (8-1) – Two more wins for the Panthers last week – Jefferson and Tampa Catholic. Their next tough game comes on March 27th when they host Jesuit in a gigantic district 16 matchup. Their easy week 5 game will keep them at #2.
  3. Berkeley Prep (8-1) – Berkeley handled Robinson and Alonso last week. In week 5 they travel to Orlando to play Connecticut’s Taft School in what will definitely be the Buccaneers toughest game all season. We don’t expect Berkeley to come out on top, but should still remain #3 in our Top 10.
  4. Jesuit (5-3) – Jesuit hosted Creekside Saturday afternoon and lost 11-4, but TLR expected that outcome. Creekside is very tough this year. Jesuit’s next five opponents are Buchholz, Dallas Jesuit, Belen Jesuit, Plant, and Riverview. That’s quite a nasty stretch of games. TLR expects the Tigers to go 4-1 or maybe 3-2 over that span. Locals should attend the Jesuit vs Plant game if they can.
  5. Newsome (10-1) – Newsome is still doing well, but their Strength of Schedule isn’t very high. Like Steinbrenner and Wiregrass, the Wolves have found themselves matched up against teams they are supposed to beat. They are fine until their last regular season game on April 11 when they travel to Jesuit.
  6. Riverview (7-1) – Three of the next four Rams opponents are Barron Collier, Shipley School from Pennsylvania, and Jesuit. If they go 2-1 over that span, they will be making a strong case to move up in our poll.
  7. Steinbrenner (6-1) – Off next week due to Spring Break. They return from their hiatus to face Wiregrass for the #1 seed heading into districts. That’s easily their most important regular season game and a candidate for our Game of the Week that week.
  8. Out-of-Door (7-1) – ODA has a huge chance to move up in our polls when they host Cardinal Mooney on March 19th. The game is a district matchup and one that impacts district seeding heading into playoffs.
  9. Wiregrass (8-0) – Wiregrass is the only team on our Top 10 that remains undefeated, but close games to much lesser opponents isn’t giving us good vibes. We’ll find out how tough Wiregrass is on March 26th when they travel to Steinbrenner. That may even be our Game of the Week.
  10. Alonso (7-3) – Alonso went 1-1 last week with a home loss to Berkeley and a road win against Jefferson. This Ravens team is head and shoulders above previous years. Spring Break in Week 5, so no games on the schedule.

Week 3

  1. Cardinal Mooney (4-1) – Mooney finally suffered a loss, but it was to Florida #9 that did it – St. Andrew’s, 11-8. They followed that game up with a win (14-6) over Miami’s Belen Jesuit on Saturday down south. The Cougars are still the best team in the area and one of the state’s Top 10. Two district games coming up with both Lakewood Ranch and Out-of-Door. We don’t imagine Mooney having much trouble in either game.
  2. Plant (6-1) – The Panthers got themselves a nice win Friday night by taking down previously unbeaten Newsome, 8-6. Their two games before Spring Break are against Jefferson and Tampa Catholic, which should be wins for the Panthers.
  3. Berkeley Prep (6-1) – Berkeley moves up after a nice home win over district rival Jesuit, 6-3. The Bucs held Jesuit scoreless during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. Berkeley is playing very well and is clearly one of the better teams in Tampa right now. District matchups against Robinson and Alonso are in week 4.
  4. Jesuit (4-2) – The Tigers suffered a road loss to Berkeley in week 3. To be fair, they are suffering from some key injuries right now. They have a very tough matchup on March 16 when they host Florida #11 Creekside.
  5. Newsome (8-1) – Newsome went on the road to Plant Friday night and went toe-to-toe with the Panthers, but walked away with an 8-6 loss. That game was tied at 6 midway through the 4th quarter, so the teams are fairly evenly matched. Newsome doesn’t have another tough game scheduled until their April 11 meeting with Jesuit.
  6. Riverview (5-1) – The Rams earned themselves a nice win against Canterbury in week 3, 5-4. Three district matchups on the docket next: Venice, St. Stephen’s, and Manatee. On paper, Riverview should take all 3 to hold onto the 2 seed in district 17.
  7. Steinbrenner (5-1) – The Warriors are easily the surprise early this season. They are quietly taking care of business. Their rivalry game against Sickles is on March 13. But unless Sickles finds a new gear soon, the game should be all Steinbrenner. Wiregrass on March 26 and Plant on April 5th are their two chances to move up.
  8. Out-of-Door (5-1) – The Thunder ended up with a 1 in the loss column when they met a strong Riverview team in week 3. Canterbury on March 15 could be a good game.
  9. Wiregrass (7-0) – Wiregrass wasn’t on our radar pre-season, but have been steadily winning. They won’t face another opponent until March 26th when they travel to Steinbrenner for an interesting matchup.
  10. Alonso (6-2) – The Ravens took down Sickles in week 3 and host a hot Berkeley squad in week 4. TLR is still impressed with Alonso so far and hope they can keep it up.

Week 2

  1. Cardinal Mooney (3-0) – The Cougars only week 2 game was against district rival Riverview. Mooney took that game 13-6 and solidified their strangle hold on district 17 – and the top spot on our list. The looming game on March 8th at St. Andrew’s will likely be their toughest matchup all season as well as one of the biggest games in the state all season.
  2. Jesuit (3-1) – This squad has already suffered a few injuries, but due to their depth and talent, continue to impress. Their 6-4 win over Barron Collier last week will certainly instill confidence within themselves. The Tigers visit district rival Berkeley Prep on Wednesday. With both teams at 3-1, this is shaping up to be a determining factor on district seeds already.
  3. Plant (3-1) – Plant ran with IMG throughout the first half last week, but gave up a few in a row and never got them back. Their offense looks much more comfortable than they did in preseason, while their defense is still stout. They host Newsome on March 8th for what has traditionally been a close game. If you’re nearby, we suggest a visit to Plant High School to check it out.
  4. Berkeley Prep (3-1) – The Bucs traveled to Admiral Farragut in week 2 and jumped out to a 9-3 lead before suffering a 1 goal loss. Berkeley was forced to start a first-year lacrosse player in goal that game, but the defense didn’t do him many favors late either. The Buccaneers host Tampa Catholic, Jesuit, and Sunlake in week 3. Keep an eye on the Jesuit game. That one is huge.
  5. Newsome (6-0) – The Wolves are quietly taking care of business in district 14. No major opponents until they visit Plant on March 8th for what should be an exciting game.
  6. Riverview (3-1) – Riverview suffered a loss on the road to a superior Cardinal Mooney squad in week 2. The Rams host both ODA and Canterbury in week 3. Both games are interesting matchups and could both be tight. If Riverview wins both, we may see them move up in our top 10.
  7. Steinbrenner (3-1) – The Warriors took a 17-11 victory over Mitchell in week 2, their only game of the week. Zephyrhills Christian and Durant are their opponents in week 3. We don’t imagine them losing either game.
  8. Out-of-Door (4-0) – Two wins in week 2 for the Thunder, but both against lesser opponents. Let’s see how they fare against Riverview on March 5. Great in-district matchup for both teams.
  9. Wiregrass (4-0) – Nice week for Wiregrass as they take down both Wharton and Sickles, both by a single goal differential. Wiregrass is looking real good so far!
  10. Alonso (4-2) – The Ravens suffered a nasty loss to a much better Plant team in week 2, but took down both Sunlake and Freedom. TLR would not have predicted Alonso taking the victory over Sunlake if you had asked us preseason. The March 8th game against Sickles wasn’t one we circled preseason either, but it is a must-watch now.

Week 1

  1. Cardinal Mooney (2-0) – Our pre-season favorite for 2019 hit the ground running, just as we expected. The Cougars took care of district foe Manatee, then hosted Lake Highland Prep for Tampa Lax Report’s Game of the Week. Mooney gave up 3 right out of the gate, then battled back and turned the game into a barn-burner, eventually taking the contest 17-15. They didn’t look as clean as they did in 2018, but with this being a week 1 matchup, some rust is to be expected. Mooney coasts until March 8th when they travel to St. Andrew’s.
  2. Jesuit (1-1) – TLR got to watch Jesuit in pre-season and saw a talented team. While some squads rely on one or two superstars, the Tigers seem to be made up of a ton of good players – no superstars. Everyone has talent and everyone can make plays. They have plenty of depth. They took care of Alonso out of the gate, then suffered a home loss to Lake Highland Prep in a fairly bad way. Again, first week so some jitters are normal. The Tigers visit Barron Collier on March 2, then travel to Berkeley on March 6. Both can be telling games.
  3. Plant (2-0) – The Panthers begin 2019 with two road wins. They host IMG on February 27th, which will certainly be a contest for them. Plant certainly has a stellar defense and goalie. If they are able to put some points on the board, they will keep games close this year.
  4. Berkeley Prep (1-0) – The Bucs move up a spot in week 1 due to Sickles seriously struggling in week 1. Their first big contest is March 1 when they travel to Admiral Farragut, then March 6 when they host Jesuit.
  5. Newsome (2-0) – The Wolves showed some toughness and resiliency when they opened the season on the road against Steinbrenner and fought to an overtime win. Historically, that game has favored Newsome. As we stated before the start of the season, Newsome may have lost a step in 2019. Unfortunately for the other teams in district 14, no one else seems to be ready to go toe-to-toe with the Wolves quite yet. Newsome’s first contest will come on March 8 when they travel to Plant.
  6. Riverview (3-0) – Riverview jumps 4 spots from 10 to 6 after week 1 games. The Rams took down Lakewood Ranch, St. Pete Catholic, and more impressively, Sickles. The beginning of March will definitely test this team as they face Cardinal Mooney on the 1st, and ODA on the 5th.
  7. Steinbrenner (2-1) – Steinbrenner lost their opener in overtime to #5 Newsome in a back-and-forth battle. Steinbrenner may be stronger than we thought in 2019. They certainly know how to make the most of their players and are known to earn gutsy wins. March 13 is the date these players have circled. That’s when the Warriors travel to Sickles for a great Tampa rivalry game. Maybe Steinbrenner takes this one in 2019?
  8. Out-of-Door (2-0) – Two easy games – two big wins for the Thunder. Their March 5 district matchup against #6 Riverview will be a game to see, no doubt. If you are in the south of our area, definitely try to make it to that game at Riverview.
  9. Wiregrass (2-0) – Wins against Mitchell and Bloomingdale open the season for Wiregrass. March 1 will tell us if Wiregrass is for real as well as whether Sickles can contend in 2019 as both teams meet at Sickles.
  10. Alonso (2-1) – The Ravens have quietly done pretty well so far in 2019. Their only loss coming to #2 Jesuit on the road. They’ve got another tough district matchup on February 28 when they travel to #3 Plant. Tough way to start a season.

Pre-Season

  1. Cardinal Mooney – Jesuit got the best of Cardinal Mooney in 2018, but the Cougars – on paper – should suffer less from graduating talent. And while Jesuit lost a chunk of players last season, we think Mooney will retain much of the talent that got earned them state-wide attention in 2018. We don’t feel this spot is even too much of a discussion this season. It’s Mooney’s.
  2. Jesuit – Jesuit is our favorite in Tampa for 2019. The program is big. It attracts talent from South Tampa. The staff and program are one of the best. Period. All that being said, TLR feels the gap between the Tigers and the other teams directly below them will narrow in 2019. Look for some great battles for the top seed in district 16 this season. We’re certainly excited about them.
  3. Plant – The Panthers have a historically strong program as well. While they did lose a lot of their offensive strength in 2018, their defense and goalie are not to be taken lightly in 2019. If they can keep up offensively with some of the stronger teams, we feel they can make a push in district 16. If they actually do suffer from the loss of offensive weapons, they’re still a lock for district 16 playoffs.
  4. Sickles – Sickles surprised a lot of folks in 2018. TLR had them high on our list and polls, though – and the Gryphons did not disappoint. As with district 16, Sickles and the rest of district 15 will find themselves in tighter games and a much tighter race for the district playoffs. There was just too much talent that graduated in 2018. Sickles is still our favorite for the top seed in district 15.
  5. Berkeley Prep – Between major injuries and a ruthless schedule, the Buccaneers took a beating in 2018 under new coach Pat Clare. If they can stay healthy in 2019, they’ve retained much of their squad and will bounce back in a big way. TLR would not be surprised to see them going toe-to-toe with teams above them in this poll – with the exception of Cardinal Mooney.
  6. Newsome – The Wolves will be going through a rebuilding year in 2019. Their district will also tighten due to graduating 2018 talent. While we expect a drop-off from previous seasons, we still feel Newsome leads district 14.
  7. Steinbrenner – This squad is in a similar boat to Sickles in that many of their weapons have moved on to college. We’re not entirely sure what to make of district 15 yet, but do think the rivalry between Sickles and Steinbrenner will be just as strong in 2019 as it has been for years.
  8. Out-of-Door – The Thunder are in an unfortunate position of sharing district 17 with our #1 pick Cardinal Mooney. ODA could easily be competing for great seeds in other districts in 2019. Don’t sleep on them, though. They have a tough schedule and could surprise some people.
  9. Bloomingdale – Bloomingdale jumped into the spotlight in 2018. We expect them to give Newsome some trouble in district 14 this season. Watch for them to continue making waves in 2019.
  10. Riverview – Had the Rams retained their outstanding goalie for this season, they’d certainly be higher on this list. But since his transfer became finalized and graduates left the school, they may find themselves rebuilding as well.
