Cardinal Mooney Hosting Sticks for Soldiers March 22-23

The Cardinal Mooney High School Boys Lacrosse team is hosting the 2nd Annual Sticks for Soldiers fundraising event to support severely-wounded soldiers.

The Cardinal Mooney High School Boys Lacrosse team will be joined by Riverview High School from Sarasota, Admiral Farragut from St. Petersburg and Saint John Paul II Academy from Boca Raton for the weekend event. All games will be played at Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota. Each team will play one game on Friday night and another on Saturday. The Friday, March 22nd games will be played at 5:00pm and 7:30pm, and the Saturday, March 23rd games are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Sticks for Soldiers invites the Sarasota community to attend this wonderful event to enjoy some great lacrosse and celebrate the commitment to our veterans exhibited by these great lacrosse programs. “We would like to thank all of the high schools, parents, coaches, players and their local communities for choosing to support Sticks for Soldiers and the wounded veterans we strive to serve.”, said Sticks for Soldiers President, Jeff Casucci. We are so proud to see the Sticks for Soldiers message spread outside of Connecticut, and we are excited to warmly welcome these programs to the Sticks for Soldiers community.” The money raised at this event will directly benefit a local veteran and the goal is $25,000. “It’s with great honor and excitement that we host the second annual Sticks for Soldiers charity tournament at Cardinal Mooney High School and we look forward to announcing this year’s honoree in the coming weeks” said Kyle Donovan, Cardinal Mooney Lacrosse.

Last year’s honoree was Vincent Mannion-Brodeur, an Army corporal severely injured by an explosive device in 2007 while on patrol in Tikrit, Iraq. The blast killed Brodeur’s squad leader and left Vincent with catastrophic head trauma, a nearly severed left arm, and bomb fragments in his upper torso. He’s undergone 43 surgeries in 24 different hospitals. Brodeur lives with his mother, a U.S. Navy veteran, and father, a U.S. Army veteran. Last year the event raised $14,000. This year the event hopes to raise $25,000 for a yet to be named honoree.

Sticks for Soldiers is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity lacrosse organization. Its dual mission is to raise financial support for the service men and women who put their lives on the line for our country while also raising awareness of their sacrifice to our high school youth.
