After Districts (Final Poll)

  1. Steinbrenner (15-1) – As expected, the lady Warriors captured the District 9 title with 2 comfortable wins last week – beating Mitchell in the district semi 13-0, and beating Wiregrass Ranch 17-3 in the district final. The lady Warriors will be facing Plant on the road for the first round of regional play on Thursday 4/22. In their first meeting, the lady Warriors won 17-7 in a highly penalized game which had the lady Warriors playing 2 players down at one point. TLR featured that game as our first Game of the Week of the 2021 Season (Feb 16th). Check it out on our link from the first meeting. This is a must-see game. Both teams have a ton of talent and it should be a great rematch.
  2. Newsome (13-1) – The lady Wolves captured their 6th consecutive district title on Thursday with 19-11 win over Riverview. They will face Venice (8-0) on Thursday 4/22 for regional play on the road. Hopefully the tough regular season schedule the lady Wolves played will pay off in regional play.
  3. Plant (14-3) – The lady Panthers once again were undefeated in district play – winning their 7th consecutive district title with their 15-4 victory over East Lake on Thursday. They will be hosting #1 Steinbrenner on Thursday 4/22 for first round of regionals. This game will actually be played at Plant, unlike the last home game that was played at Anderson Elementary School due to soccer playoffs.
  4. Riverview (7-7-1) – The lady Rams finished as District 11 runners-up as they fell to Newsome 19-11 in the district final. Riverview girls kept it close in the first half, only down by 2, but could not hold on in the second half only scoring 6 goals to Newsome’s 12. Great season for the Rams, we look forward to seeing them in 2021.
  5. Wiregrass (9-6) – Great season for the lady Bulls making it to the District 9 2A semi-finals. Unfortunately, they had to face one of the top teams in the state for their district final, doing slightly better than their first meeting losing 17-3.

This week’s upcoming games have them seeing IMG Academy (7-5) on Monday 4/5 away and Community School of Naples (14-1) on Friday 4/9 at home to close out regular season play. They did play 2 other home games earlier in the week winning both by a wide margin. They beat Durant 30-2 on Tuesday and Bloomingdale 25-2 on Friday. Both will be fantastic games. Polls may have more movement next week.
  3. Plant (8-2) – The Lady Panthers drop a spot with their 14-12 loss to new #2 Newsome (9-0) on Monday. We applaud both programs on scheduling this game on a Monday. 2. Plant (7-1) – The Lady Panthers were idle like most of 2A last week. Huge road match-up on Monday, March 22nd vs #3 Newsome (7-0) should be a must-see game next week. The Lady Panthers will end the week vs a tough Robinson (5-4) on Thursday, 3/25 away.
  3. Newsome (7-0) – No games last week due to Spring Break. Big opportunity for the Lady Wolves to jump up in this poll with a huge home game vs #2 Plant (7-1). 2. Plant (7-1) – The Lady Panthers won both of their games this week – getting a close 11-7 win at home against Sickles (3-5), then beating Durant (1-5) on Friday 15-4. No games next week due to spring break, but a huge match-up on Monday, March 22nd vs #3 Newsome (7-0).
  3. Newsome (7-0) – Another 2 comfortable wins for the Lady Wolves this week – 22-4 at Lakewood Ranch on Wednesday and a 22-1 win at Durant on Thursday. Spring break this upcoming week, but the schedule starts to toughen up for the Lady Wolves when they get back starting with #2 Plant (7-1) on Monday, March 22nd.
  4. Wiregrass (5-2) – The Lady Bulls jump up a spot this week. They beat Mitchell 11-8 at home on Tuesday night and lost to #1 Steinbrenner 21-5 at home on Thursday. 5. Lakewood Ranch (5-3) – The Lady Mustangs played only one game this week, taking on #3 Newsome at home Wednesday and losing 22-4. Spring break next week, so no games, but tough games coming up when they return to play.

Week 3

  1. Steinbrenner (7-0) – The Lady Warriors played 2 games this week: Mitchell (2-1) on Tuesday 3/2 winning 18-2 and Wharton (1-2) winning 22-0. The Lady Warriors are here to stay for a while. Next week they will face Wiregrass (4-1) on Thursday 3/11 and Sickles on Friday 3/12. Both games are away.
  2. Plant (5-1) – The Lady Panthers seem to be back to form with 2 wins this week – winning at St. Petersburg (2-2) away 20-7 on Tuesday 3/2, then traveling to East Lake (5-1) on Thursday 3/4 and winning 19-7. Their game vs Barron Collier (3-2) on Saturday morning was cancelled. Upcoming games with Sickles and Durant next week should find the Lady Panthers in the same spot on our next poll.
  3. Newsome (5-0) – The Lady Wolves took care of business this week dispatching Wiregrass (3-0) on Tuesday 22-3 and Sickles (2-3) on Friday 27-3. Next week the Lady Wolves will be on the road to face Lakewood Ranch (5-2) and Durant (1-2). We don’t expect movement from this position in our poll.
  4. Lakewood Ranch (5-2) – The Lady Mustangs had an up and down week starting with a close 7-3 home loss to talented Cypress Creek (7-0) on Monday and ending with an 18-4 win at Durant on Friday. Next week they will see Newsome (5-0) at home on Wednesday 3/10 and St. Petersburg (3-3) away on Thursday 3/11. Expect another up and down week for the lady Mustangs.
  5. Wiregrass (4-1) – The Lady Bulls jump in at #5 this week with their close 7-3 road win over Sunlake (4-1) on Thursday. They did suffer their first loss of the season earlier in the week to top ranked Newsome (5-0) on Tuesday 22-3 away. More tough games for the Lady Bulls coming up as they face Mitchell (2-3) at home on Tuesday 3/10 and #1 Steinbrenner (7-0) on Thursday 3/11 at home.

Week 2

  1. Steinbrenner (5-0) – The lady Warriors laid low this week compared to last, only playing 1 road game on Tuesday 2/23. Steinbrenner’s offense however, showed no signs of slowing down winning 26-1 over Sunlake (2-0).  Steinbrenner offense eclipsed the century mark in goals this week, outscoring opponents a whopping 117-23 in only 5 games.  Next weeks opponents Mitchell (2-1) on Tuesday 3/2 and Wharton (1-2) should not be a challenge.  The lady Warriors are here to stay for a while.
  2. Plant (3-1) – The lady Panthers rebounded nicely this week with 3 wins.  Their first of the week was a 14-13 OT victory over a surprising Academy of the Holy Names (1-0) on the road, followed by 16-3 victory over Palm Harbor University (0-2) on Tuesday 2/23 at Anderson Fields and 17-4 victory over Alonso (0-4) on the road Thursday 2/25. Plant will play 3 games next week. St. Petersburg (2-2) away on Tuesday 3/2, resurgent East Lake (4-1) on Thursday 3/4, then ending with a home game vs Barron Collier (3-2) on Saturday morning.
  3. Newsome (3-0) – The lady Wolves played only 1 game this week vs Manatee (0-1) on Wednesday 2/24 at home winning 21-0. Their game with Durant for Friday 2/26 has been postponed.  Upcoming home games with 3-0 Wiregrass Ranch on Tuesday 3/2 and 0-3 Sickles on Friday 3/5 will complete their week.  Wiregrass game on Tuesday will be interesting.
  4. Lakewood Ranch (4-1) – The lady Mustangs dropped their first game of the season to Cardinal Mooney 13-12 at home on Thursday 2/25 but we still consider them in our top 5 for 2A.  They did manage to win 2 out of 3 games they played this week 10-8 over St. Pete Catholic (2-0) on Tuesday 2/23 away and 17-5 over Bloomingdale (0-2) on Friday night 2/26.  No games on the schedule for next week.
  5. Sunlake (3-1) – Welcome to the top 5 lady Seahawks!  Sunlake’s only loss of the season 26-1 came at home on Tuesday 2/23 to #1 Steinbrenner (4-0) narrowly avoiding the shutout.  The lady Seahawks bounced back, knocking off a depleted Mitchell (2-0) away 5-4 in a very low scoring game, Thursday 2/25.  Upcoming games vs Wharton (1-2) on Tuesday 3/2 away and surging Wiregrass (3-0) on Thursday 3/4 away will determine if the lady Seahawks hold top 5 rankings.

Week 1

  1. Steinbrenner (4-0) – The Lady Warriors had a big week, playing 4 games and outscoring their opponents 91-22. Opening with tough rival Plant (Our game of the Week) 17-7 Tuesday the 16th, then district 10’s Alonso 30-4 Thursday, then traveling Saturday to play back-to-back games with Gulf Coast (23-6 win) and Barron Collier (21-5 win). It just goes to show not only the talent but the depth of this team. One game vs Sunlake next week. We do not see this team being tested again until they see Newsome in a few weeks. You shouldn’t expect to see them out of this spot for the duration of the season.
  2. Plant (0-1) – The Lady Panthers look to rebound after their tough opening day defeat to top-ranked Steinbrenner. We know these 2 teams will see each other again in Regionals. Plant’s next opponents are Academy of the Holy Names on Monday Feb 22nd, then district 10 opponents Palm Harbor University on Tuesday the 23rd, and finally Alonso on Thursday, February 25th. We expect Plant to get back on track and hold #2 position going in to Week 3.
  3. Newsome (2-0) – The Lady Wolves played 2 away games to open the season – beating Alonso for the season opener on Tuesday 21-1 and facing a tough Riverview team on Thursday, winning 12-6. The Wolves will play their first home game Wednesday the 24th against Manatee (0-1) and close out the week on Friday with Durant on the road. We do not expect to see them lose their position anytime soon.
  4. Mitchell (2-0) – Mitchell played two home games opening week – beating Clearwater 15-3 on Tuesday and then Palm Harbor University 11-3 on Thursday. The Lady Mustangs only play one game next week – Sunlake.
  5. Lakewood Ranch (2-0) – Lakewood Ranch won both of their games last week at home and away. Opening in Sarasota on Wednesday the 17th with a 15-1 win and then facing a tough Manatee team at home Friday the 19th winning 9-5. The Mustangs play 3 games next week starting with St. Pete Catholic on Tuesday the 23rd, then facing Cardinal Mooney on Thursday the 25th, and closing the week with Bloomingdale on Friday the 26th. It should be a challenging week.

Pre-Season

  1. Steinbrenner – The Warriors began what we think is their multi-year reign as the top girls team in the area in 2020. Given they are packed with young talent, TLR sees them holding this spot for the next 2+ years at least.
  2. Plant – While TLR put Plant at #2 to start 2021, this is always a team to beat in Tampa. They are a talented, strong group of girls and always well coached. This is another team that can go far.
  3. Newsome – The Lady Wolves have a new coach this season, but always seem to be loaded with talent. They lost some senior talent last year, but we believe they are still one of the top teams in the area.
  4. Mitchell – The Mustangs had one of their best seasons going 8-1. Only loss was to Steinbrenner.
  5. Lakewood Ranch – 8-2 last season and undefeated in district play, but did not get to meet Newsome last season. Maybe they can challenge for the top spot in 2021.
