Boys Mid-Season Report

This Novel Coronavirus break is as good a time as any to give everyone a mid-season update. We are about halfway through the season (tentatively) and to be honest, there haven’t been a lot of surprises on the boys side of things. Let’s look at how we expected things to shake out just before the season started.

1A District 9

Pre-Season Mid-Season
1 Jesuit 1 Berkeley
2 Berkeley 2 Jesuit
3 Calvary Christian 3 Calvary Christian
4 Tampa Catholic 4 Tampa Catholic

Now, Berkeley is 5-0 and sitting atop the district. Jesuit is 3-1, losing only to Berkeley. Calvary is 2-2 with losses to Berkeley and Jesuit. Tampa Catholic has only played 1 district game – a loss to Berkeley. Not a lot of surprises, as we did say, “District 9 this year could go to either Jesuit or Berkeley.” So far, it’s Berkeley with the top seed. Hard to say where TC will ultimately fall in the seedings since they’ve only got that single game under their belt.

1A District 10

Pre-Season Mid-Season
1 St. Stephen’s 1 Northside Christian
2 Northside Christian 2 Robinson
3 Robinson 3 St. Pete Catholic
4 Jefferson 4 St. Stephen’s

This district is harder to peg as many of the teams had their district matchups scheduled after this date. Technically, Northside Christian and Robinson are tied for the #1 seed at 2-0. St. Pete Catholic is #3 at 1-2, and St. Stephen’s and Tampa Prep are tied for #4 at 0-0. Instead of looking at this mathematically, TLR would put St. Stephen’s or Northside Christian as the likely #1 due to their performance outside of district matchups. Unfortunately their head-to-head matchup scheduled for March 13 was cancelled.

1A District 11

Pre-Season Mid-Season
1 Cardinal Mooney 1 Cardinal Mooney
2 Canterbury 2 Bishop Verot
3 Out-of-Door 3 Canterbury
4 Bishop Verot 4 Out-of-Door

Cardinal Mooney is 2-0 in the district and the #1 seed. Bishop Verot has only played one district game, but it was a win, so they are #2. Behind them at #3 is Canterbury at 1-1. It gets even sketchier after that as Out-of-Door and Port Charlotte are both 0-0 in district play. Like District 10, many of these teams scheduled their district games for later in the season. But based on out of district games, we’d put Mooney at 1, Bishop Verot at 2, Canterbury at 3, and ODA at 4. Again, just guessing as too many district games have yet to be played.

2A District 9

Pre-Season Mid-Season
1 Steinbrenner 1 Steinbrenner
2 Wiregrass 2 Mitchell
3 Mitchell 3 East Lake
4 Sunlake 4 Wharton

Steinbrenner was expected by TLR to have a good season. They are 5-0 in district play and the easy #1 seed for district 9. Mitchell comes in at #2 with a 3-1 record. Their only loss was to Steinbrenner. East Lake and Wharton are both 2-2 and tied for the 3rd seed right now. East Lake wasn’t on our radar, so it’s nice to be surprised when a new team pops up and makes some waves. There are some district games left to play, so we hope they can be played.

2A District 10

Pre-Season Mid-Season
1 Plant 1 Plant
2 Lakewood Ranch 2 Alonso
3 Alonso 3 Sickles
4 Sickles 4 Palm Harbor

Plant is what we expected pre-season – a solid, well coached team. They are undefeated – 6-0 – in district play. Very easy #1 seed for the Panthers. #2 seed is Alonso.  Their only district loss is to Plant. Surprisingly good season for them. Sickles checks in as the #3 seed at 3-2. Their district losses came against Plant and Alonso. Palm Harbor University nabs the #4 spot with a record of 2-3 in district play. We had Lakewood Ranch as #2, but they’ve only played a single district game so far. Hard to tell where they will eventually end up.

2A District 11

Pre-Season Mid-Season
1 Newsome 1 Newsome
2 Bloomingdale 2 Bloomingdale
3 Lakeland 3 Bartow
4 Durant 4 ?

As expected, Newsome is secure in the #1 spot at 4-0. Bloomingdale is 3-1 and in control of the #2 spot. Bartow, not on our radar pre-season, is #3 with a 2-1 district record. No one else in the district has a district win yet.
